I had the pleasure of interviewing Shelly Debicki, a young mom with a passion for health and fitness. Find out how she stays lean year round!
Name: Shelly Debicki
Starting weight: 130 (Feb 2013)
Current weight: 108 (Aug 2013)
How did you get started in health and fitness?
After having my son in August of 2012 I knew I needed to start working out to drop my baby weight. I started off in October of 2012 by just doing cardio and occasional machines once to twice a week (nothing serious) and quit working out after a couple of months. I moved to Minnesota in February 2013 where I hired a personal trainer and actually started seeing small results. It wasn’t until I started lifting weights and eating clean in April 2013 that I started seeing drastic results.
What is your best accomplishment so far?
My best accomplishment… I honestly see everyday as my best accomplishment in and outside of the gym. I am constantly working on myself and trying to be a better person all around physically and emotionally each day. I am a single mom juggling working out daily, raising my son alone, eating clean, and in the process of getting my certification to be a personal trainer.
How do you stay motivated? Who inspires you?
What is your favourite type of cardio?
What does your current training routine look like?
What Is your diet like? Do you follow a specific diet? (paleo, IIFYM, clean eating, calorie counting etc)
I eat as clean as possible. I do not eat anything that contains flour or anything processed. My daily meals consist of fish (mainly tilapia or salmon), chicken, veggies, brown rice, fruit, etc. I eat around 4 meals per day with a few snacks in between (I love quest bars, smoothies, or fruit).
How do you deal with cravings?
I have replaced all sweet fatty junk foods with fruit. Anytime I crave something sweet I will munch on fruit or go on www.muffin-topless.com (Savannah’s website) and get healthy low calorie sweet treat recipes.
What are your favourite meals?
My favorite meals are tilapia topped with guacamole, wild salmon burgers, and anything topped with non salted, all natural peanut butter (controlled portions of course).
What is your favourite cheat food?
I have so many! My top favorites would have to be protein pancakes, pizza, sushi, and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies!
When I moved back in with my Mom after leaving my son’s father who was abusive, I had a lot of self esteem and stress issues to deal with. THE FIRST THING I did when I got to California was go straight to the gym and sign up! I knew I would never get through the bad times without something to make me feel better about myself and help me get through it. When you hit rock bottom you can only go uphill from there. Take control of your life and don’t let negativity bring you down. Everyone deserves to be happy and to feel good about themselves! Start by cutting out excuses not to get your butt up and workout! Your mind controls your motivation. If you have doubts you will simply not reach your goals. Stay motivated! What helps me is each morning I go onto Instagram and look at motivational and positive posts to start my day. Every gym (at least every one I have been to) has a daycare! Make it one of your main priorities ladies and don’t give up!
If you could start back from the first day you started training would you do anything different?
Yes, when I started training I would be scared to go into the weights section of the gym. It was full of intimidating, muscular, and sweaty men all staring at me like I was a deer in a tiger cage! It was so intimidating! I learned to have tunnel vision and not worry about what people think. Everyone has to start somewhere and if someone chooses to judge, let it be their problem not yours!
